Year 5 recently enjoyed an unforgettable three-day residential at Marrick Priory in Richmond, set in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. From the moment they arrived, the children were encouraged to step out of their comfort zones, build independence and take on new challenges.
One of the first tasks was learning to look after themselves — making their own beds, organising their belongings and helping to set tables for meals. These simple responsibilities quickly became an important part of the experience, helping the children develop confidence and a sense of teamwork.
The days were packed with exciting outdoor activities designed to challenge both body and mind. From climbing and high ropes to problem-solving challenges, the children showed incredible determination and resilience. Many pushed themselves to try things they had never done before, supporting and encouraging one another every step of the way. These activities are designed to build confidence, teamwork and independence, all while having fun in the outdoors.
One of the most memorable experiences was the night walk, where the children had to rely on their listening skills, communication and trust in their teammates to navigate challenges in the dark. It was a brilliant opportunity to develop cooperation and really think about how to work together effectively.
Throughout the residential, the children embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and positivity. They returned home not only with great memories, but also with new skills, stronger friendships and a real sense of achievement. It was a truly rewarding experience that will stay with them for a long time.
