Year 5 – Discovering the Anglo-Saxons

In History, Year 5 have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons and their arrival in Britain. The children have explored where the Anglo-Saxons came from — areas that are now Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands — and discussed the reasons why they made the journey to Britain.

Through their lessons, pupils discovered that people came to Britain in search of new land and farming space, as well as to bring their families and settle. They also learned how some warriors were invited to help protect Britain after the Romans left, which later led to larger groups staying and establishing communities.

The children have enjoyed piecing together what life was like at the time and how these early settlers helped shape the history of Britain.
