Year 3 – Science – Rocks, soils, and fossils

In our chemistry strand of science, we have focused on rocks, soils, and fossils. This week, Year 3 children have taken a closer look at soil. We looked at how soil is formed,  before looking closely at a variety of soils, including loam soils, as part of an experiment where we tested the permeability of soils. Loam soils generally contain more nutrients and moisture than sandy soils, and therefore have better drainage.

Children made a prediction on which soil would be the most and least permeable out of the soils we used, before using conical flasks, filter paper, soil, and water, to do our experiment. Children kept time for filtering and water amount the same. We then wrote up our results.
