KATS at Newcastle University

A small group of children had the incredible opportunity to visit Newcastle University today, accompanied by Robbie from the KATS team (Kids Action Through Science). The visit began with an exclusive tour of Newcastle University’s impressive new building. During the tour, the children marvelled at Mars Rovers, racing car chassis, cutting-edge 3D printing technology, water flow research, and the state-of-the-art educational rooms. They were warmly welcomed by Lucia, Zak, and Elle, who guided them throughout this enlightening experience.

The children also visited the Great North Museum, where they met Martin Karran from the Fiona Foundation, a dedicated family-run foundation that supports initiatives like the KATS project at Newcastle University. This interaction provided the children with an opportunity to discuss the incredible experiences they’ve had, such as their visit to the Farne Islands to study marine wildlife, creating media diaries with children from Delhi, and exploring the numerous technological advancements and opportunities in engineering at Newcastle University.

The children’s day was filled with hands-on learning and awe-inspiring sights. At the university, they were fascinated by the intricate details of the Mars Rovers, understanding the complexities involved in space exploration. The racing car chassis ignited their curiosity about automotive engineering and the possibilities of designing high-performance vehicles. The 3D printing demonstrations showcased the future of manufacturing, where they saw how innovative designs come to life layer by layer. The focus on water flow allowed them to grasp the importance of water management and sustainability in today’s world.

Their exploration of the high-tech educational rooms provided a glimpse into the future of learning, highlighting the integration of advanced technology in education. At the Great North Museum, the children’s engagement with Martin Karran emphasised the importance of community support in enriching educational experiences. They shared their own stories of remarkable opportunities, from marine wildlife exploration at the Farne Islands to international media projects with peers in Delhi.

This visit was more than just a tour; it was an inspiring journey that broadened their horizons and sparked their imaginations. The children left with a profound sense of excitement and motivation, eager to explore the endless possibilities that lie ahead in their educational and professional journeys.
