Year 3 Get Active with Athletics and Balancing Skills!

This half-term, Year 3 have thrown themselves—quite literally—into our PE focus on athletics and key balancing skills. With summer in full swing, we’ve made the most of the sunshine and fresh air by heading outside for an energetic carousel of activities designed to develop agility, coordination, and control.

The children rotated through a variety of stations, each with its own physical challenge. At the beanbag station, pupils practised their aim and accuracy by tossing beanbags into hoops placed at different distances—trickier than it sounds when the wind picks up! At another station, the focus shifted to speed and stamina with short-distance running.

Football fans especially enjoyed the dribbling drills, weaving the ball around cones with increasing speed and precision. Meanwhile, those with a flair for flight took on the rocket throw—our safer, softer version of the javelin—working on their technique to get the longest and most accurate throws.

Throughout the session, a key focus was on developing balance and core stability. Whether standing on one leg to throw, maintaining posture while running, or keeping control of a football, pupils were encouraged to think about how their body moves and how to stay in control.

Year 3 have shown determination, energy, and some very impressive throwing arms—we may have a few future athletes in the making!
