Exploring Spreadsheets in Computing!
In computing this term, Year 3 have been developing their digital skills by learning all about spreadsheets. We explored how spreadsheets can be used to organise, display, and analyse information in fun and creative ways.
One of the most exciting activities involved using colour codes within a spreadsheet to create digital images. The children worked with the 'Wizard Formula' tool on Purple Mash, carefully selecting colours and filling in spreadsheet cells to design their own pixel-style artwork. This was a fantastic way to combine computing with creativity!
We also investigated how spreadsheets can be used to collect and display data. The children conducted a survey to find out Year 3’s favourite ice cream flavours. They practiced adding data into a spreadsheet, ensuring their information was organized correctly with clear column titles. Once the data was in place, they experimented with different ways to present it, such as bar charts, tables and pie charts, helping them understand how spreadsheets can be used in real-world situations.
By the end of the lessons, the children had built confidence in using spreadsheets to organise information, create images, and display data visually. It has been a brilliant unit of work, and these skills will continue to be useful across many subjects in the future!
