Last week, our school was bursting with colour, laughter, and a real sense of history as we came together to commemorate VE Day – Victory in Europe Day – marking the end of the Second World War in Europe. Pupils arrived dressed in red, white and blue, proudly wearing the colours of the Union Jack. The school was transformed into a sea of patriotic pride, with excited chatter about what the day would bring.
The morning began with themed word searches and colouring activities that helped spark thoughtful conversations about how families lived during the war, and how children found comfort in small things even during difficult times.
We then tuned in to Newsround to learn more about the meaning of VE Day. Pupils watched special footage of royal celebrations and were amazed by the spectacular Red Arrows flying over Buckingham Palace.
The afternoon was packed with excitement as pupils headed outside for a range of traditional World War II playground games. There was skipping, hopscotch, hula hooping, and even some joyful singing of wartime songs. The playground echoed with laughter and fun, just like it might have done during VE Day celebrations in 1945.
Before the day ended, everyone took part in a VE Day quiz, testing what they’d learnt and sharing their ideas. Finally, it was time for a proper party! Pupils sat down to enjoy party food, just as communities would have done on VE Day all those years ago – sharing stories, enjoying treats, and celebrating together.
It was a fantastic day, full of learning, reflection and fun. Most importantly, it helped our pupils understand the importance of peace, togetherness, and remembering those who made sacrifices for our future.
Well done to all the children for their brilliant attitudes, and a huge thank you to all the staff who helped bring the day to life.
