This week Year One have been investigating quarters. First of all the children looked at shapes and how to quarter them. They discovered that the shape is only in quarter if all parts are exactly the same size. The children had fun working with their learning partners trying to sort shapes into ‘quarters’ and ‘not quarters’.
Next the children moved onto quartering quantities. The first step was to identify the whole number, then the children shared the quantity equally into four quarters using ‘Quarter Boards’. After that the children moved from the concrete method to the pictorial method drawing the quarter board and sharing the quantities out equally.
When the children were confident at this they moved onto problem-solving using halves and quarters. A great week’s work.
