Girls Under 11s

Girls Go Marching On

The girls’ under11 football team collected their third piece of silverware this season when they won the Newcastle Catholic Primary Schools 5 aside competition on Wednesday afternoon. Playing at Westgate Centre for Sport and without injured key player, Aurelia Penman, they comfortably won their group with wins over St Lawrence’s, St Charles, St Alban’s A, St Bede’s and St Catherine’s.

The girls then won their semifinal with a resounding victory over St Alban’s B. In the final they faced St Lawrence’s for the second time as they had beaten the strong Sacred Heart team in the other semifinal.

However, St Teresa’s had played some scintillating football leading up to the final and they proved no match for their opponents to take the trophy with a 5-0 win.

The competition was played in a great spirit and the girls demonstrated not only tremendous teamwork and individual skills but also a wonderful sporting attitude. Squad: Emily Smith, Phoebe Sanderson, Katie Jordan, Anna Brent, Stephanie Riley and Niamh Boothroyd. A second girls’ team and two under 9 boys’ teams also took part in competitions and everyone played their part in a tremendously enjoyable afternoon.

The previous evening, the girls (plus Emma Urwin) reached the semi final stage of the Diocesan wide Northern Cross Cup with wins over St Columba’s (2-1) and Star of the Sea (5-0).

However, St Teresa’s had played some scintillating football leading up to the final and they proved no match for their opponents to take the trophy with a 5-0 win.

Cross Country

Catholic Schools’ Cross Country championships, again held at St Cuthbert’s High School, St Teresa’s won an impressive haul of medals and trophies. A record number (fourteen schools) took part and in excellent running conditions, our under 9 boys took the team title.

Zayd Mouats (Year 3) was the individual winner and his classmate Timo Sanderson was second.

The under 9 girls gained third place in the team standings with Niamh Boothroyd (Year 4) finishing in second place.

The under 11 boys and girls teams battled hard over a longer distance and Aurelia Penman (Year 6) was a clear winner of the girls’ race. Well done, everyone and thanks to coaches Miss McTernan and Mrs Mackenzie.
